PRESS STATEMENT REGARDING THE PROPOSED NYPD IMPOUND LOT RELOCATION TO SPRINGFIELD GARDENS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Statement

The NYPD has proposed Springfield Gardens as the relocation site for the NYPD Impound Lot which is currently operating in College Point, Queens. The residents of Springfield Gardens are in opposition to the NYPD Impound Lot relocation proposal. Citing environmental concerns and the lack of adequate community notification and consultation, the residents believe that the area is already over-saturated with environmentally unfriendly facilities including JFK airport and an MTA bus facility. Additionally, Rockaway Blvd. is an already heavily automobile travel route which adds to the air and noise pollution in this residential community. Also troubling is the City’s forceful arrogance in budgeting and planning the relocation of the NYPD Impound Lot before adequately notifying the community of their proposed plans. Queens resident and Community Board member, Marquez Claxton states, “The community has spoken loud and clear in unanimous opposition to this proposed project. We cannot continue to allow our severely under-resourced community to be further polluted and used as a dumping ground for the City’s most unpopular projects. We hope that the borough president will see this plan as an insult to our community and work to defeat it. “
