MOMS A SECRET WEAPON VS. GUNS

MOMS A SECRET WEAPON VS. GUNS

November 19, 2006Gunfire robbed them of their sons. Now, a group of angry moms is firing back at the peddlers who put the weapons on the street.
The group, Harlem Mothers Stop Another Violent End, is using “grass-roots” surveillance to find out where illegal guns are being sold – but insist they will pass on the fruits of their investigations to cops, rather than resort to vigilante justice.
Yesterday, on the steps of City Hall, state Assemblyman Keith Wright and the mothers gave a secret list collected over two months – containing the names of five Harlem bodegas which they claim are dealing guns or harboring gun dealers – to 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, a civil-rights group.

100 Blacks will analyze the list and pass the findings to police, said representative Marq Claxton.

“Who’s giving our kids guns? That’s the question,” said grieving mom Jackie Rowe-Adams, who lost son Anthony Bouldin, 17, to a bullet 25 years ago. She then lived through the nightmare again when another son, Tyrone Bouldin, was gunned down 17 years later.

Wright said he intends to introduce a bill in the Assembly in January calling for a lifetime ban on all city and state-issued permits – such as business licenses or drivers’ licenses – for store owners found to be selling guns or harboring gun dealers.

Rowe-Adams works with children at the Parks Department, and says kids as young as 9 years old tell her that guns are readily available at corner stores – for as little as $50.

“Where do you get a gun?” she asks them. She said they reply, “Oh, it’s easy, Ms. Adams. Our friends go get guns at bodegas and buildings.”

Her outrage and grief led her and the other moms to form the group, using their position as neighborhood insiders as a weapon.

“We can get places nobody can. We hear things other people don’t hear,” she said, while refusing to be specific about the group’s methods.

Claxton, a 15-year veteran of Brooklyn’s 90th Precinct who retired from the NYPD in 2005, called the mothers’ probe “good, old-fashioned reconnaissance and investigating.”

“These dens of death have to be closed down,” he added.

Wright, speaking for the mothers, said, “We are not a vigilante group.”

He also said that the women “are not sophisticated investigators.”

“This is a fledgling group. We’ve established a hot line – it’s a cellphone. This is something that’s being done on the grass-roots level. Sometimes, communities have to stand up and do things for themselves.”

Wright refused to divulge the names of the bodegas.

“We’re not going to make that list public, simply because we do not want these mothers to be retaliated against,” Wright said.

To report gun sales, call Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. any time at (917) 420-2248.
